Cheryl Rock was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Cheryl studied in Windsor, Ontario, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours, and a Bachelor of Education degree. Upon completing her education, Cheryl traveled to Japan in 1999 where her first experiences with curating gallery showings and community events inspired her to become an active participant in the Toronto arts scene.
Cheryl’s work blossomed with knowledge of her Barbadian roots. Inspired by the stories of her ancestors, and a growing appreciation for her heritage. Cheryl began to incoporate aspects of this rich tapestry into her artwork. Her work is a documentation of people and experiences, informed by West Indian Culture. The layers of materials, motifs, and marking is her mixed media paintings, are a symbolic representation of the experiences of people of African descent. All of Cheryl’s artwork is infused with the pride, internal strength, and knowledge of self which exludes from people of Barbadian descent.
