Stephen Hamilton is a Boston area painter, illustrator and part time art instructor. His work focuses on the aesthetics and philosophies inherent throughout Africa and the Diaspora. It strives to create a dialogue between contemporary black cultures and the ancient African world. In his paintings, splendor and opulence in not only material, but spiritual and cultural richness are conveyed through use of pattern and texture. These culturally significant patterns and symbols are used as light, shadow, atmosphere and object. This is juxtaposed with the human figure to create cultural and historical narrative with surreal and symbolist elements.
